There is something undeniably magical about Swiss train travel, but every once in a while, a journey comes along that turns standard transit into a story you’ll tell for years. That is exactly what happened when my brother and I boarded the GoldenPass Belle Époque from Montreux to Zweisimmen.

After spending a few unforgettable, music-filled days soaking in the electric energy of the Montreux Jazz Festival right on the shores of Lake Geneva, my brother and I decided to slow down the pace of our trip. Rather than taking standard intercity trains to our next stop, we packed our bags, put on our best vintage-inspired attire, and boarded the GoldenPass Belle Époque from Montreux to Zweisimmen.

Naturally, we turned it into a full occasion and dressed up, because how often do you get to step inside a moving piece of 1930s elegance? As someone who endlessly swoons over vintage travel posters, Art Nouveau details, and the Belle Époque era itself, this ride felt like stepping right into the pages of an Agatha Christie novel.

If you're planning a trip through Switzerland and want a taste of vintage romance without the eye-watering price tag of a luxury train, here is everything you need to know about this dream route.

The History: The Orient Express Connection

To truly appreciate this journey, you have to know a bit about the history of the Montreux Oberland Bernois (MOB) railway line. Founded back in 1899, the MOB was an absolute pioneer of Swiss tourism, establishing one of the country's first fully electric mountain railways.

In 1931, at the height of romantic luxury travel, the MOB launched the legendary Golden Mountain Pullman Express in direct collaboration with the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits - the very same company behind the Orient Express. While the Great Depression cut that original Pullman service short, the spirit of that golden age returned when the MOB introduced today’s Belle Époque carriages. These meticulous restorations and faithful reproductions feature rich, polished wood paneling, gleaming brass light fixtures, intricate luggage racks, and deep, plush velvet seats modeled directly after those classic 1930s Orient Express-style Pullman cars.

Stepping Back in Time: The Belle Époque Carriages

The moment the train pulls up to the platform in Montreux, it completely sets itself apart. While modern Swiss trains are sleek and minimalist, these carriages are pure 1930s nostalgia, modeled directly after the historic Golden Pass Express of the interwar era.

Stepping inside feels like entering a moving period film:

  • The Craftsmanship: Think polished wood paneling, gleaming brass fixtures, delicate luggage racks, and deeply upholstered, comfortable seating.

  • The Vibe: It feels intimate, elegant, and wonderfully slow. Sitting across from my brother in our dressed-up attire, watching the Swiss landscape roll past through brass-framed windows, was easily one of the highlights of our trip.

The Route: From Palm Trees to Alpine Peaks

The Belle Époque operates along the historic Montreux-Oberland Bernois (MOB) railway line. What makes this specific line so special is the dramatic shift in scenery over just a couple of hours. Leaving Montreux, the train immediately climbs up into the hills above Lake Geneva. As you wind through terraced vineyards, you get sweeping views over the deep blue water and palm trees, a landscape so mild it feels almost Mediterranean.

As you push deeper inland, the scenery transforms into classic Swiss fairytale territory: wooden chalets, lush green meadows, and rugged peaks:

  • Château-d'Œx: A picturesque valley town framed by towering peaks, famous for its hot air ballooning.

  • Gstaad: The world-famous luxury resort town, where traditional timber chalets meet designer storefronts against a dramatic alpine backdrop.

A Secret Tip for First-Time Visitors

We took the route heading east from Montreux, but if you’ve never been to Switzerland before, I actually recommend doing it in reverse, from Zweisimmen down to Montreux. Coming out of the high, rugged mountains and suddenly breaking through to reveal the glittering, vast expanse of Lake Geneva far below is a moment of pure magic.

Practical Info: Planning Your Ride

As a planner at heart (yes, I love a good spreadsheet!), here are the practical details to keep in mind:

1. Checking the Timetable

The MOB line operates a mix of trains. Alongside the Belle Époque, you’ll also see the modern GoldenPass Express (which has panoramic windows and seamless track-switching technology). If you specifically want the vintage carriage experience, make sure to double-check the timetable for the "Belle Époque" indicator when booking!

2. Tickets & Swiss Passes

Here is the best part: the Belle Époque is categorized as a regular regional train! You don't need an expensive luxury pass to ride it.

  • Swiss Travel Pass & GA Pass: Fully covered! You can simply hop on.

  • Standard Tickets: Point-to-point tickets for 1st and 2nd class are valid.

  • Seat Reservations: While not mandatory, I strongly recommend making a seat reservation during high season (summer and peak winter months) - it gives you peace of mind and guarantees you and your travel companion get seats together in your preferred carriage.

3. First vs. Second Class

Both classes are beautifully restored with vintage wood and fabric details. However, First Class offers comfier seats, extra legroom, and a slightly quieter atmosphere. I traveled in second class, which is what I normally do (unless it's carnevale time in Ticino - if you know, you know).

4. Bar Service & Local Wine

You are welcome to pack your own picnic, but if you enjoy the little rituals of travel like I do, treat yourself to the onboard bar service. Ordering a chilled glass of local Swiss wine while watching mountain streams zip past is worth every single franc.

Onward to Interlaken

The Belle Époque line finishes at Zweisimmen, a charming hub in the Bernese Oberland.

If your journey continues toward Interlaken, Grindelwald, or Lauterbrunnen, the connection couldn't be smoother. You simply walk across the platform to the connecting regional train heading toward Spiez and Interlaken Ost. Swiss public transit shines here, everything is timed down to the minute, making the transition effortless.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Without a doubt, yes. The GoldenPass Belle Époque combines the slow, romantic art of travel with the staggering natural beauty Switzerland is famous for.

Whether you're traveling solo, exploring with family, or making memories with a sibling like I did, it’s a journey that reminds you why the process of getting there can be just as sweet as the destination. Put on a nice outfit, pour a glass of wine, and let the landscape do the rest!

Ciao ciao, e al prossimo viaggio ✨
