Rising between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz, Mount Rigi is often called the Queen of the Mountains, and it’s easy to see why. With sweeping panoramic views, charming alpine trails, and one of the oldest mountain railways in Europe, Rigi perfectly captures the magic of the Swiss Alps.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, a casual explorer, or simply in the mood for mountain air (or spa time), Rigi offers something for everyone.

A Mountain That Shaped Swiss Tourism

Before Switzerland became Switzerland™ (you know, the perfectly marketed alpine dream), Rigi was already a star.

In the 1800s, it was one of the first mountains in Europe to attract international tourists. Wealthy travellers made the journey here long before ski resorts and cable cars existed.

The opening of the Rigi Railways in 1871 completely changed Alpine tourism. Suddenly, reaching the summit wasn’t just for mountaineers, it became accessible to almost everyone. That’s when Rigi earned its royal nickname.

Artists and writers followed:

  • J. M. W. Turner painted its dramatic light

  • Mark Twain wrote about the experience of climbing it

And honestly? Not much has changed. The views are still just as breathtaking.

Why Mount Rigi is So Special

It’s not the height, it’s the location. From the top, you’re surrounded by water and mountains at the same time. On a clear day, you’ll see:

  • 13 lakes

  • the Alps stretching endlessly south

  • the Swiss Plateau fading north

But what makes it different is the feeling:Rigi is accessible without losing its magic. You don’t need to suffer for the view (unless you want to).

Getting to Mount Rigi

You can easily reach Rigi from Lucerne, Zug, or Arth-Goldau, and the journey is part of the fun!

  • By Train: Take the Rigi Railways (Rigi Bahn) from Vitznau or Arth-Goldau. The ride to the top at Rigi Kulm (1,798 m) takes about 30–40 minutes and offers beautiful views along the way.

  • By Boat: From Lucerne, hop on a boat across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau, where you can connect to the cogwheel train. It’s one of the most scenic day trips in Switzerland!

  • By Hike: There are dozens of trails leading to and around Rigi, so you can hike up, take the train down, or the other way around.

💡 Pro tip: If you want to do a loop, go up from Arth-Goldau and come down toward Vitznau, then take the ferry back to Lucerne (that's what I normally do).

Things to Do on Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi isn’t just about the summit, it’s a destination with endless possibilities. Here’s what to do once you’re there:

1. Take in the Panoramic Views

From Rigi Kulm, enjoy a 360° panorama over central Switzerland — from the snow-capped Alps to the glittering lakes below. Don’t forget your camera!

2. Hike Your Way Around

Rigi has over 120 km of trails, and what’s great is that they’re well-marked, beginner-friendly, and incredibly panoramic.

Easy Walks (Perfect Even Without Gear)

  • Rigi Kulm → Rigi Kaltbad: Wide paths, minimal elevation, and best for train spotting.

Medium Trails

  • Rigi Kaltbad → Rigi Scheidegg: Rolling landscapes, forests, and open views.

Challenging Option

  • Arth-Goldau → Rigi Kulm: A proper climb, but very rewarding.

💡 Tip: You don’t need to commit. You can always hop on the train mid-hike.

3. Ride the Cogwheel Train

Even if you’re not hiking, the historic Rigi Bahn is worth the trip alone. It’s the oldest mountain railway in Europe, in service since 1871, and the ride feels straight out of a vintage postcard.

4. Enjoy Winter Adventures

In winter, Rigi turns into a snowy playground with sledging runs, snowshoe trails, and cozy mountain restaurants serving Swiss classics like rösti and fondue.

5. Relax at Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths

If your legs need a break, head to Rigi Kaltbad Spa, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. Float in warm mineral water while looking out at Lake Lucerne, trust me, it’s as good as it sounds.

The Spa Experience at Rigi Kaltbad

Let’s talk about one of the highlights: the Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad.

Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, this spa is the definition of minimalist mountain luxury.

  • Indoor and outdoor mineral pools

  • Floor-to-ceiling Alpine views

  • Steam bath and relaxation areas

  • Warm water even in winter (yes, even when it’s snowing ❄️)

Floating in warm water while looking over Lake Lucerne is one of those “this is why I live in Switzerland” moments.

💡 Good to know:

  • Day passes available

  • Easily accessible by train (no hiking required)

  • Best booked in advance on weekends

  • Entry: ~38–48 CHF

  • Towels included

👉 If you’re not hiking, you can literally go up just for this, and it’s worth it.

Exploring Arth-Goldau or Ending the Day in Vitznau

Often overlooked, Arth-Goldau is more than just a starting point.

What to do:

  • Visit the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, where you can walk among deer and see bears and wolves

  • Explore the village and surrounding lowland trails

  • Start your Rigi hike from here if you want something more active

It’s a great option if you want to combine nature, wildlife, and hiking in one day.

After exploring, descend toward Vitznau, a peaceful lakeside village at the foot of Rigi. Grab a drink by the water, enjoy the quiet rhythm of the lake, and watch the ferries glide by.

If you have time, take the boat back to Lucerne or on the other side of the lake to Brunnen or Flüelen. The journey is as beautiful as the mountain itself, calm, scenic, and the perfect way to end the day.

💡 Insider tip: The evening ferries often have fewer passengers, so you can sit outside, feel the breeze, and enjoy a private-feeling cruise surrounded by mountains.

My Personal Take

I’ve explored plenty of trails in Switzerland, but Mount Rigi keeps pulling me back. Maybe it’s the mix of accessibility, beauty, and that feeling of peace you get when the world stretches out beneath you.

Whether you go for a quick escape, a full hiking day, or a spa retreat with a view, Rigi delivers every time.

So lace up your boots (or don’t - the train works fine too 😉), grab your camera, and let the Queen of the Mountains remind you why Switzerland really does it best.
